Ben went back to school and received his Master’s in Teaching from Concordia University in North Portland. He spent his first year of teaching at Dexter McCarty, and then spent his next 6 years at an alternative school with campuses in both North Portland and Rockwood. When Ben is not teaching, he enjoys traveling, playing soccer, and spending time with his family and dogs. His wife’s name is Emma, his 16 month old son is named Benicio, and his dogs’ names are Murphy and Finnigin. Ben is excited to be back teaching 7th grade math/advanced math at McCarty and is looking forward to a great year!
KAYLA ALLEN will be teaching 6th grade Language Arts. She is so excited to be a part of the Dexter McCarty family! Kayla was born and raised in the Northwest, but spent the last three years teaching in Arizona. It was a wonderful experience, but she is so happy to be close to family and friends. Kayla loves kayaking, hiking, reading, watching sports, and is a huge Seattle Seahawks fan! She feels really lucky to be at this school, and looks forward to getting to know the staff, families, and all of her new students.
LIZZY KIRKHAM has been teaching outside the classroom since she was about 14. She taught swimming skills for a variety of age groups, from young children to adults. She attended Eckerd College, a small college located in St. Petersburg, Florida where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies. Ms. Kirkham spent the next 7+ years as an informal educator, teaching at several informal and outdoor education facilities: The Audubon Society of Portland, The Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, Conejo Valley Unified School District, Outdoor School in Malibu, California, NatureBridge in Thousand Oaks, California, The Outdoor School at Rancho Alegre in Santa Barbara, California, and Tualatin Hills Nature Center in Beaverton. Ms. Kirkham followed suit with the outdoor school tradition of adopting a “nature name” and became Hummingbird for the better part of the last three years. After accepting an offer to join the Master of Arts in Teaching cohort at the University of Portland in 2016, Ms. Kirkham began student teaching with Brie Bui-Hirschberg, the 8th grade science teacher here at McCarty. After successfully completing her Master’s degree, Ms. Kirkham was invited to join the McCarty staff as our 6th grade Science teacher - an offer she could not refuse! Best of all: she’s really thrilled to go back to Outdoor School again, this time as a teacher!
